Info Update # 36 - 1st December 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Well, first day - of the last month of the year - that means only 25 days till the big fella arrives.

I have decided to put together a special christmas pack for all those actors who want to do more but just can't afford it.

Your plan would be to get someone to buy you the "QOS Actors Gold Star Pack" as a gift. OR - if you are planning to get some moola for xmas - why don't your order yourself a pack and then reimburse yourself when the money comes in 25 days!!
-----------------------------------------------

Congratulations to QOS Reader - Amylea Griffith who did her first commercial last week. Amylea spent 2 days on set at Goulburn playing a "flower"!! no less. She tells of long days, heat and sunburn - but absolutely loved it. Well done Amylea. Amylea has another agent but was submitted as a QOS reader.

Congrats to Penny Hall, Damien Cavanough and John Cross who all have auditions on Wed for a TVC. The brief came to us from a Casting Director who I Interviewed a couple of years back at one of our actors info days. Penny is with another agent - who didn't submit her for the role. I submitted her as a QOS reader and she has an audition. Good luck Penny - if she was not a QOS member - she would not have had this opportunity.

QOS has an actors database of over 7000 people. We often get sent audition notices when casting directors are looking for new faces or a unique look. We list the audition notices and you need to be a member to action them. Just another reason to pick up a QOS Star Pack.
---------------------------------------------

Brisbane actors - AT2 have a fab info night happening tonight - see below for info.
---------------------------------------------

Have you seen all the PAID WORK - casting notices on the board?
Another reason to pick up a QOS Gold Star Pack NOW!

------------------------------------------------

Nobel is a Gold Coast actor who was doing the TAFTA National Actors Intensive on the Gold Coast a couple of months ago.

One of the teachers was ABC casting Director Alison Telford who is currently casting the new Chris Lilley series ( which has been picked up by HBO in America and BBC in the UK). She remembered Nobel from the course and this week has auditioned him for a role - working with the man himself - Chris Lilley.
Yes WOW and double WOW.

More info below.

Have a great week,
Lee

Latest Quiet On Set News

Congratulations to Nobel Lakaev
So Alison Telfor d is from the ABC in Melbourne - Nobel is on the Gold Coast - how does he audition for a Melbourne role.

Well for one - he was doing an intensive training course so the casting director saw him and knows he has the skills to do the role.
These NAI's are highly regarded training.
You get to work with the best of the best in the Australian Film & TV Industry.

As Nobel's agent, I organise for him to do the Audition with John Stewart - John does headshots and film work and we burn it to DVD that afternoon - it is on Alisons desk the next day.

The key thing is having the training that is recognised and having the opportunity to work in front of casting professionals who are currently casting.

Melbourne actors are the lucky ones - they have a NAI happening in Jan.

DON"T MISS IT....................

Feedback from QOS Readers
Dear Lee,
I would like to thank you for listing and submitting me for the toyota commercial. I was cast as a 'flowergirl' and spent two days in Goulburn for the shoot. It was an excellent experience, particularly being able to observe the amount of people and hard work that is inherent in filming a commercial. Being my first TVC, it has definitely confirmed to me that I would like to continue to work towards an acting career. It has also proven that it is worth becoming a member of Quiet on Set, which is what I intended to spend a portion of my pay from the commercial on.
Thanks again, Amylea

Hot Courses - DO NOT MISS!!
The Australian Film & Television Academy
(TAFTA PRODUCTIONS)

THIS FIVE DAY INTENSIVE IS DESIGNED FOR TEENAGERS AS A COMBINATION OF SPECIFICALLY STRUCTURED LESSONS ON THE CRAFT OF ACTING FOR THE SCREEN AND ALSO AS A WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY IN THE FORM OF SCREENTEST AND AUDITION WORKSHOPS WITH SOME OF AUSTRALIA'S BEST KNOWN CASTING DIRECTORS and FILM & TELEVISION DIRECTORS.

WHY: Teens are often students of the school drama classes and this type of learning whilst valid for the school curriculum, is not valid in the real working world of paid work. I constantly see young teens, 15-16yrs who love their school drama classes and performing but then they want to take it to the next level and audition for roles on Neighbours - and they are just not trained to the level that is required for film and television work.

IF YOU ARE A TEEN IN MELBOURNE that LUUUUVVVVVS drama class at school and wants the chance to audition for Neighbours and highly paid television commercials - then don't miss this class - and start 2010 actor ready!!

Info Update # 34 Monday 16th November 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Thanks so much for all your feedback from last week. Yep, ya gotta laugh.

If you missed the story - you can get a copy of last weeks newsletter just click HERE For the link.

The feedback is below.
A few tormented souls took offence and thought I was too harsh - well my comment would be that they are a little too fragile for the acting industry. I mean as actors, we submit ourselves to scrutiny by others on a constant basis. Are we ever good enough - the question is constant. Whilst you might be good enough - you are not right for the role - maybe next time etc. Arghhhh the tortured mind of an actor. It is not an easy job. At times it is like the schoolyard process of lining up and being selected to be on the "team". Who gets chosen first - well that depends on the game you are playing. The tall kid, the strong kid, the fast kid, the agro kid. All depends on the role that you are lining your self up for.

So for those who have fragile egos - do not read any further - go and get a nice secure job when you are well rewarded for your efforts on a daily basis and you do not have to subject yourself to the scrutiny of others ( being the casting director/producer).

For those of you who love the adrenalin rush of performing and stepping out of your boundaries to perform in front of others, or to do a character that requires you to really let go and try something new, become a character that you didn't know was in you, to remember the lines and get it all out even!!!
Well done, I completely understand and my advice is to just stick with - it is not easy but by god it is addictive.

lol yep - ya gotta laugh and not take yourself too seriously!!

Have a great week, heaps of castings on the board. No excuses.

On the Talent Agency front - been busy of course. We are currently submitting our actors for Neighours, major TVC's feature films etc.
Loads of good stuff.

How do you get the work - do the training, get the experience, work hard and get and agent.

Cheers
Lee

CONGRATS TO RACHEL OAKMAN WHO IS "ON HOLD" FOR THE GOULBURN COMMERCIAL!!
The Oakman family went along - submitted by QOS. No agent, Goulburn locals.
Fingers crossed. Well done!
----------------------------------------------------

To all those people who had sudden family members become ill and were rushed to hospital - and couldn't make the auditions I booked them in for - hope all have recovered and are well.
I think there were about 5 groups who must have all met each other in hospital in fact - pretty amazing coincidences really - but lets hope everyone is back up and around.
:) Lee

Hi Lee
Just got home and had to write and tell you about the audition,,,what a scream! It was a cattle call with every man and his dog. There was every sort of person you could possibly imagine from ZZ Top to Pee Wee Herman. Some girls came looking like they were auditioning for a Max Factor add. I just loved every minute. I could be quite happy being a professional auditionee, I really do enjoy the auditioning/casting process.
I came looking just as you suggested. No make-up, no eyelashes, just a pair of jeans and a white t-shirt. Looked like I belonged there. I arrived early, did my paperwork then was put in the line up. Very easy audition. While waiting I enjoyed my favourite past time of watching people. I sure wasn't disappointed today.
Cant wait to see who they pick when the TVC is aired.
Thanks for sending me, it was a great experience, hope I start earning you a bit of money soon.
CG
-----------------------------------------------

Hi Lee,
Wow, now I know why it's impossible to get direct access to casting directros, too many freaks out there hey, as you know I'm serious about my acting, however I am a little confused why did they only want to see people for Goulburn I would have loved to be part of this commercial and Goulburn is only two hours drive from Sydney, it seems a little unfair when their is such a talent pool up here and I definatly have a country look.
Is it because they wanted to save on costs for transport?
Answer
Just logistics - but that is what they specified. There is wardrobe calls and call backs so they don't want to drag people down to Goulburn.
Locals on the spot works better.
-------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for your info for the TVC auditions in Goulburn. Ray & Kelsey are going to have a great time & are very excited especially as this is just the start for Kelsey!!!!(lots of positive thoughts for our girl).

I have just read your newsletter & I wanted to express to you that I felt so bad for you when I read it, you sounded very cranky/upset. I also wanted to thank you very much for your time, as I am one of those amateur mothers who is hoping to do the best thing for her daughter to follow her dream, without being too much of a pest either. Please accept my apologies if I tackled this the wrong way.
Nope - you didn't at all - great work on getting to the auditions - Lee

Info from Matt Butcher

Info Update #33 friday 6th November 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

Well what a week.

I can't tell how frustrating it is dealing with people who "wanna be" actors, but don't have ANY understanding of the process.

We recently listed a casting for a large commercial being filmed in Goulburn. The casting director was looking for local people from the area to work - PAID - as extras on the shoot. Good money, easy pay.

So we listed the notice - detailing that it was a country look they were after - please respond if you are interested.

Well here is what happened:
1. People sent me emails with NO CONTACT PHONE NUMBERS. So frustrating - how can I contact you to confirm an audition time????

2. People sent me almost porno photographs! The brief said "country folk" - I do not want to see any bosoms, heavy makeup, or bare bottoms!!!!!!
(Yes I know country people can be sexy too, but in a commercial, you have a couple of seconds to get the message across and communicate to the viewer, so if the look is country, or heavy metal, or corporate - that is the type of photo I need to see)

3. I got headshots, I resized the photos, presented them to the casting people, I booked the extras in for auditions and then - they just never confirmed back with me? HELLO!!! I know actors out there who would kill for this opportunity - it is PAID WORK - and you did apply for it - what happened there?

4. I had people call me and say, look - keep me in mind for something else - yeah right - like - how many times do you think they will be auditioning for a major commercial in Goulburn!!!!!

Do you get my frustration?

No wonder the casting directors do not publicise audition information - their time would be spent dealing with people who are not serious, have no understanding of how the casting process works and just "wanna-be" famous.

Sorry guys - there are steps you can take.

If you want to know how the industry works - WE DO HAVE INFO that will help you.
Pick up a copy of the EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW -To Become an Actor Ezine from the bookstore, or How To Fast Track Your Career.

This is the first step for people who are SERIOUS!!!

I am still smiling and laughing but also very cranky with the people who have wasted mine and the casting directors time.

AND HERE IS ANOTHER THING:
(Watch out - I am on a role here :)

All of the above is why casting directors do not take SELF SUBMISSIONS from actors or list the casting info to the general public.

If you see roles for major TV shows advertised on other sites, and you as an actor just have to click SUBMIT - I can assure you your chances of getting an audition would be almost zero!!
Casting directors do not have time to sort through the garbage that comes from "wanna-be" actors who don't have agents.
If you have the training and experience for the role, your agent will submit you - and the casting director will look at the submission.

If you are one of the many "wanna-be" actors who are self submitting via an online members sites for shows such as mmmm... Underbelly, I can assure you that the casting director will not be interested. Those notices go out to all the agents - so if you have an agent - and you are right for the job - your agent will submit you. If you are an experienced actor and don't have an agent - DO NOT believe that you have a chance of being on one of these shows by self submitting.

It is just that site listing the info to get your money!

Have a great weekend,

Lee

Acting to Camera & Casting Workshop

TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia. With over twenty years experience ¡V the last ten owning her own agency ¡V Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting. Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors. She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance.

Moreover, Toni understands that finding the perfect cast is not a matter of flicking through a book. She scouts for real people that will give the product the edge it requires.
¡¥When I work with Toni, I know I¡¦m going to end up with a great cast.¡¦
Mat Humphrey, The Guild

Toni collaborates closely with directors and she ensures that her vision is aligned with that of the creative team.

¡¥The casting director is a collaborator. As a director, I don¡¦t want a casting director to bring in a bunch of people in the hope that I will find one who is interesting. That is a waste of my time and the actor¡¦s time. Toni and I discuss the roles in detail and she will bring in four or five really good people for each role. It¡¦s great when you take the results to the agency and nobody can decide who to lose!¡¦
David Gaddie, The Sweetshop

The workshop will maximize your career opportunities by helping you develop the fine art of performing onscreen. It teaches students how best to present themselves on camera when delivering their work to the camera, to directors, and casting agents, thereby making the most of the screen test experience.

You will be allocated a time asked to return at your casting time for a TVC and/ or Series role.
You will then be critiqued and advised, there and then, to enhance your casting performance. All casting will be filmed.

The Author
Anna Waters-Massey is a Drama teacher and experienced performer. She has taught Drama for many years, performed in various theatre productions, TV and film, and regularly does voice overs and jingles for studios and production houses. Her "Cool Stuff" Books have been on the bestselling list at Brisbane's "Book Nook" for well over a year.

What the kids say about the workshop
Anna's workshop was really enjoyable and at the same time informative. I received lots of great tips and had a lot of fun. Her books are full of great scripts that I will use in future drama lessons and at eisteddfods. In a small group everyone got to know each other really well and Anna talked to us individually which made it a valuable experience. Thanks Anna!!

Sophie 15yrs
I thought the workshop was fabulous I've been to so many workshops that have been a bit boring and so expensive. Your workshop was great; full of fun and exciting things that I can use towards my acting career thanks so much.

Tiah 11yrs
I thought your course was fantastic and I learnt a lot about being natural when I'm acting instead of always playing it up. It's a shame that your course didn't go for longer than the 2 hours because they went so fast and I would have loved to learn more. I met some great people and I had a lot of fun. I hope that you keep holding these courses, as I would love to attend more and extend my learning of acting.

Kate 13yrs
I enjoyed your workshop so much and I highly recommend other people to take the course. I loved it when we had to play various roles out of your book, and then swap characters. It made me feel more confident about acting. Even though I was the youngest in the group I got a lot out of it.

What teachers say about the books
I have recently purchased a class set of Anna's "Cool Stuff for kids to Perform" (Bks 1 & 2) for my year 8 Drama classes. I have found these books an invaluable resource rich in possibilities to aid the creativity of young Dramatists. The books have supplied me with countless possibilities for both scripted and unscripted dramas, whilst also presenting rich ideas for starting points for improvisation, characterisation and performance skill development. I have also noticed the ease with which my students can use the books because of the physical format they are presented in; small, easy to read and handle. A 'must have' for every middle school Drama teacher.

Amanda Murray-Salter, teacher St Teresa's Catholic College Noosaville. Qld

"Cool Stuff for Kids to Perform" is a great resource for any primary to middle years teacher to have. The impro starters are fantastic fun and have proven to be a great way to end lessons. The scenes and monologues are diverse and give the opportunity to explore characters and alternative ways to investigate some social issues like bullying.

Hi guys

CASTING CALL - NOW:
I just spoke with the Casting Director of this major TVC - they are looking for 67-79 yr Male and Females - typical grannies and pa's!!
If you are out there as readers - please email me now.
-------------------------------------------------

I am flat out this week submitting our Quiet On Set Talent actors for roles on :

Underbelly, Movies and Television commercials for major brands.

The producers and casting directors are looking for ALL SHAPES & SIZES and I mean ALL.
For example, a nerdy Guy, a cynical guy, a Greek or Italian looking male 38-46yrs, a truck driver with a license 30-50yrs, young mates having a fight, young mates hanging together, a beach girl, a guy at a bus stop.

You get the picture - the roles are so diverse and so varied, and so - "REAL PEOPLE".

If you are starting out and have not done a lot of work within the industry and you don't have an agent - you can't be serious about being an actor. You are simply missing out on the PAID work.

If you are not on AT2 and Showcast - you can't be serious about your acting career.

I have had a lot of applications for representation with Quiet ON Set Talent - and I am processing those - it takes a bit of time as I am so busy processing the castings but please - if you have REGISTERED and have not sent me your headshot and cv - please do so ASAP!!
There is a good chance I have work for you.
--------------------------------------------------

Cheers
Lee
