QOS Reader in LA!
Hi Lee,

I have been meaning to write to you for a while but I really wanted to mention a course I did in the US last year (yes, I went to train in the US!!!!). I have long had your voice in my ear, as I remembered one time you said you wished you'd gone there to train years ago and if you had your time over, you would definitely have done that. So I booked a trip in October last year and went. So exciting.

I studied at The Acting Corps in LA and took their 1 month course called Actors Bootcamp. I can't say enough positive things about it! It was 5 days a week for 4 weeks and I learned so, so much there. They focus on the Meisner and Chekhov techniques, which were new to me but I sure learned what they were about quickly. We also took classes in scene study and cold reads etc. It was a fantastic, well rounded course. I can't wait to head back for the next level of Bootcamp - 8 weeks, 5 days a week!

I really wanted to say thank you for being that little voice in my ear that pushed me to take the leap and go to LA. Thank you! And I also really wanted to let people know about this reputable school. If you know of anyone that's considering venturing over, I'd be more than happy to talk to them about my experiences there and accommodation and price and all those things, if they want to email me: tanijacks@yahoo.com.au.
It really helped me to have someone to talk to about schools, as well as little things like transport and getting around.

Oh, and when I got home, I was feeling so motivated and passionate, I auditioned for Screenwise's 2 yr Intensive with Denise, and I got in!! Needless to say, I feel like my journey is well and truly underway and on track :-).

Thanks again Lee!!!
Tanya Jackson

ps
Since I got home, I also auditioned for one of the student films you had in the casting notices (and got the lead!), and I also auditioned for, and landed, a featured extra spot on a TVC, AND a little itty bitty 50 worder (which translates to 1 line lol) on a TV show. So yep ... feeling GREAT! THANK YOU!!!!! :-)

Acting Essentials Intensive Workshop - Sydney
The focus of Acting Essentials is on the voice, but as the voice and body cannot be separated, the body must be a part of the training, thus it is essentially voice/body training.

My goal for this workshop is for actors to become more skilled at linking the separate areas of actor training to create a more "whole" and embodied experience.

During the workshop we will be addressing the areas of breath, voice and body, and how they combine and apply to the overall experience of acting, essentially "connecting the dots". We will be using scenes and short texts to explore these connections, so you will have a system of exploration that you can take away with you. Handouts will be provided so that you can revisit and continue to explore the work as you need to.

Sydney - April 18th & 19th;

CONTACT AIMEE BLESING (aimee.blesing@gmail.com) FOR MORE INFORMATION OR FOR AN APPLICATION FORM

She has spent over 10 years training in performance, voice and movement and is passionate about making innovative and world class performing arts training available to Australian performers.

"She has exceptional skills as an actor and... has become one of our leading Practitioners of this work, genuinely gifted as an instructor....I highly recommend her."
- Nancy Krebs, Master Teacher, Lessac Kinesensic Training, Maryland USA

Tony Award winning actor Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon, Dracula) on his experience of Lessac Kinesensic Training...

"...for thirty years or more it has sustained me. I have never lost my voice due to strain, overuse, or, more importantly, misuse... It has given me infinite vocal freedom. It works, and once acquired it will do the same for you...It's simple to maintain and only strengthens the voice as you grow older."

Sydney School of Playback Theatre
"Storytelling is fundamental to the human search for meaning."
(Mary Catherine Bateson)

This is your chance to immerse yourself in the excitement and challenge of playback theatre. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to have a go, to play, to move and meet yourself and others in a new way. Some of the takeaway skills are; learning to improvise, body language, the power of personal story, use of metaphor, ensemble/team work and active listening skills.

Playback is unique improvisational theatre that breaks down the barrier between actors and audience. It is created spontaneously through collaboration between performers and audience resulting in a unique experience not possible in conventional theatre.

Audience members tell snippets or stories from their lives and the actors play the story back using movement, drama, and music. On the spot - no rehearsal, no planning - complete improvisation.
It's startling, moving, and very often, very funny!

The experience is voluntary your particpation is welcomed and encouraged but not compulsory so shy audience members are welcome to sit back, relax and enjoy the drama unfolding in front of them.........

Inspiration from QOS Reader - Alex
Hi Lee

Anne and Alex in LA here! Well, Alex is following the dream We've been here for 4 weeks. He has attended lots and lots of casting director workshop (getting fabulous feedback), has a regular acting tutor, got through to the the Producers callbacks on 2 Disney pilots..... and....has just done his first job.

He scored a SAG approved TV commercial for Sears. We thought he was just a featured extra or something, but when we got there - he was the hero boy! Its one of those commercials that have a bit of a story line. To top it off, the DOP was a golden globe winner and regularily works with Spielberg!!!

So, Alex is now SAG eligible - which is awesome!!!! We are so thrilled.
We've just had to push our flights back by a week, because Sears have asked if Alex is available to do a photo shoot on Monday.

Just wanted to drop you a line because you have been so supportive of Alex's career and have always given us great advice.

All the best...and live the dream
Anne and Alex

Thanks Anne, remember us when Alex is famous and don't forget about passing on that Oscar's invite!

TONI HIGGINBOTHAM - WORKSHOP - THIS SUNDAY!
TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia.

With over twenty years experience ¡V the last ten owning her own agency ¡V Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting. Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors.

She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance. Moreover, Toni understands that finding the perfect cast is not a matter of flicking through a book. She scouts for real people that will give the product the edge it requires.

¡¥When I work with Toni, I know I¡¦m going to end up with a great cast.¡¦ Mat Humphrey,
The Guild .

Toni collaborates closely with directors and she ensures that her vision is aligned with that of the creative team. ¡¥The casting director is a collaborator. As a director, I don¡¦t want a casting director to bring in a bunch of people in the hope that I will find one who is interesting. That is a waste of my time and the actor¡¦s time. Toni and I discuss the roles in detail and she will bring in four or five really good people for each role. It¡¦s great when you take the results to the agency and nobody can decide who to lose!¡¦
David Gaddie, The Sweetshop

Toni is a specialist in TV commercial casting, as well as consulting on drama projects and presenting roles for the major networks. Hunting for talent for the thousands of different roles has resulted in Toni becoming an invaluable resource for directors and producers of the highest calibre. The Toni Higginbotham Screen Acting Masterclass provides actors, models and extras with a career-focused intensive workshop for their commercial, film and television castings. Through practical exercises with one of the industry¡¦s most revered and experienced actors (see Teachers), students will learn skills and techniques central to successful auditioning. In an intimate setting, students will work closely with TONI HIGGINBOTHAM, one of Australia¡¦s principal casting directors, who will explain the casting process from her side of the camera, answer all your questions, and guide you through the dos and don¡¦ts in the audition room.

The workshop will maximize your career opportunities by helping you develop the fine art of performing onscreen. It will explain how the casting studio is set-up, camera angles and position, and how artists can exploit their own qualities in front of the lens. The course teaches students how best to present themselves on camera, to directors, and casting agents, thereby making the most of the screen test experience.

The workshop will be a 1 day workshop.
