Well, August ! whoa - that has gone fast.
We have just wrapped up school holidays and all the kids drama workshops.
I did some volunteer drama club work at the local school last year and there was a lot of interest from the kids. So we ran workshops through the last holidays.
Each day for the past 2 weeks I have been taking kids for drama and modelling workshops. It has been so much fun and we acutally have a mix of boys and girls which was great. The boys were actually quite good once they get over the need to show off. The girls were quite good, once they get over their shyness and there need to pose!! lol. Now I have so many budding stars, they love the camera time whereas in the beginning, I couldn't get any volunteers to go first!! So funny and great to see them progress in confidence and skill.
Note to parents with budding young Nicoles' and Hughs': One thing I have discovered is there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY that kids can go to auditions and expect to get the job without any previous experience. Technically they would just not be good enough.
They wriggle, their eyes wander all over the place, their voices don't project enough. So training is def a must if you child wants to be on screen.
Also kids can be so confident and the perfect show off performer at home, but in front of strangers, they are too shy.
So mums - if you have paid for an agent and your child has not done any training - then you are wasting your money. Also training prepares them for the sitting around and to have patience. Some kids just can't do that.
You need to be "quite on set" literally and some kids lose interest in about 5 mins if the attention is not on them. They are simply unable to sit quietly for hours. And that is what is required.
So - the workshops were fun and it is so rewarding.
NOTES FROM QUIET ON SET TALENT AGENCY
Well it is crazy as usual. We are submitting our actors for work in all states of QLD, NSW and VIC. Congratulations to Katie Johnson, she is filming a TVC next week.
Good luck to all those actors auditioning for Sea Patrol 5 this week. Fingers crossed for you all.
Note to all actors - if you have worked in the past 12 months, you will be receiving group certificates so if you have changed your postal address, don't forget to let your agent know.
On the work front, well we have just done submissions for Neighbours, Special Ops, A new Kids TV Series on the gold coast, Sea Patrol 5, East West 101 etc. and more. On the commercial front, the casting is constant - everything from Insurance to Chicken, from Nappies to Telco Companies.
Highly paid work at $12 000 a day to featured extra work at $500-$1200 a day.
Today they were looking for a guy to play a Butcher in New York - couple of days travel, couple of days filming, all up over $16000 min.
The look was your every day guy, with the ability to work a crowd on the street.
ANYONE HAS A LOOK THAT CAN GET THEM WORK IN THE ACTING INDUSTRY - THE DIFFERENCE IIN ACTUALLY GETTING THE WORK IS THE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE TO GET THE JOB!! YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR ACTORS TOOLS AND HAVE DONE THE HARD YARDS.
Actors Tools? you need to have a GREAT headshot. You need to have done some training, and for the higher paid work, you need to have a great body of work behind you. The competition is fierce, you just don't get lucky, working in the acting industry takes commitment, flexibility of time, training and actors tools ( headshots and cv).
Speaking of flexibility of time - the casting process happens in an afternoon, you will get called in for an audition in the morning. If you have a full time job and can't get time off, you can't do acting work for the now!

Colonel Melkett: he is Carol's father - a fierce army officer of the old school. Carol probably gets her brains from him. He is somewhere between 45 and 60.
Harold: the neighbour from across the hall. He tends to be possessive and hysterical. He is about 30.
Clea: the ex-girlfriend - intelligent bohemian with an acid tongue. The role was created by Maggie Smith so the actor has something to live up to here! She is in her 20s and glamorous.
Schuppanzigh: a middle aged German who works for the London Electricity Board.

The Sydney Travelling Film Festival is back on the road again and our first stop will be Huskisson in late August. Do you have an idea for a children's drama series for television?
What do you do next - how do you progress it to the next level?
This is a specialised course for writers, directors and producers. Over one day this course will give you the knowledge to approach funding bodies and broadcasters and speak the language of children's television production. You will be exposed to pitch documents and series bibles, and given an overview of children's broadcasting regulations. In order to further enrich the experience, participants will take part in a script reading of an award winning Australian animated series. The script will be analysed in regard to its communication, entertainment and structure.
This course will teach you the essential things you need to know in order for you to move forward in the development and realization of your series airing. Participants will walk away with a fundamental knowledge of the children's television industry including who the current players are.

Course Presenter
Robert wrote for a number of soaps including Prisoner and Sons and Daughters before choosing to work in children's drama. He has written for 3 AFI award winning series, Round the Twist, Lift Off and Skytrackers as well as writing and script editing for the animated series Li'l Elvis Jones and the Truckstoppers and Kangaroo Creek Gang. He has Script Produced Dogstar, Rockit! and Pixel Pinkie.
Robert has also developed concepts for children's drama series and has credits on The Crash Zone, Worst Best Friends, Horace and Tina, Snobs and G2G. He has strong skills in work shopping teams to develop concepts and storylines that translate into award-winning shows.
Robert has assessed for Film Victoria's New Writers' Scheme and script edited features by some of their first time writers. He is also a consultant with the Australian Communications and Media Authority(ACMA) an independent assessor for The Australian Children's Television Foundation Script Development Program as well as a lecturer at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Melbourne University and has lectured and run seminars internationally. He has assessed for every state funding body and has been a judge for the International Emmy Awards- Children's and Young People's Category.
In 2001 Robert won an AWGIE award for his writing on Round the Twist.

Tim Ferguson is one of Australia's most successful comedians and an original member of the iconoclastic Doug Anthony All Stars. Join Tim in this 2 day Masterclass for screen and scriptwriters and unlock the 'code' to great comedic writing. Tim will present participants with practical and accessible processes to devise comedic characters, conflict and narratives. He will examine new approaches to metaphor, juxtaposition, reversal, pathos, subtext and dialogue rhythms used within comedy.
Participants will learn the techniques required to develop a sitcom inclusive theme, genre, style and tone.
