TIP OF THE WEEK
HOW TO PRESENT YOURSELF AS A PROFESSIONAL ACTOR.
1. Have a valid email address. By valid, I mean one that is valid to your acting career.
Valid means an email address that has your name in it.
eg. lee.donehue@hotmail.com is great.
drama_queen_luvs_ya_baby@hotmail.com is not!
2. Have a professional looking headshot and have it named professionally.
eg. lee_donehue.jpg or lee.donehue_BW.jpg
Not, partyshot1.jpg.
A professional looking headshot should not be expensive. No backgrounds, no hats, hands, props, stage makeup, or a performing look. Your headshot should show your personality.
If you are a bad guy type, don't have a smiley headshot. If you are a funky type, don't have a headshot taken in a suit and tie.
Don't have a shot of you with your friends or anyone else.
You get my drift.
An actors headshot is one of the MOST IMPORTANT tools you have. It is your calling card. It is the first thing the casting director looks at as the casting process and the defining of characters is a very physical realm. How the character looks tells the story, particularly for TVC's when you don't have a lot of time to build background about the character. The Bank Manager has to look like a suit type and the shopping mum needs to look like shopping mum, and the snowboarder needs to look like a snowboarder.
Professional actors have the tools to represent them professionally and a non professional shot is a dead giveaway that you are new to the industry.

Up to $30,000 in development funding is up for grabs from ABC Children's Television as part of a new initiative to be held at the SPAA Conference.
Producers are invited to submit a brief concept document for a game/quiz show suitable for commissioning as a long-running, low-cost series on ABC3. The project is aimed at an audience of kids aged 8 to 12 years.
The ABC will select four finalists who will be invited to a private pitch during the SPAA Conference with the winner to be awarded a guaranteed prize of $5,000. At the ABC's discretion a further development funding and a pilot deal of up to $25,000 may be offered.
The project must be an original Australian concept and feature Australian kids. It must appeal to the 8 - 12 year old demographic and have a clear winner (group or individual) and not judged by opinion. The ABC is looking for a project that can be produced in high volume at low cost and suitable for playing on-line as well as watching on-air. Applicants are invited to submit a proposal of more than five pages in length.

ABC TV's new digital free-to-air kids channel has begun with ABC3 set to launch before the end of 2009. ABC3 will offer kids a world of their own, accessible through the technology they choose, and one they can interact with on many levels. Programs with strong multi-platform or cross-platform elements will be sort as new and innovative ways to engage with the audience.

New Kids TV Market announced for SPAA Conference
The Kids Market is designed to allow producers of children's content to meet with local and international Children's Television Executives in one-on-one meetings.
The 15-minute meetings are pre-booked and provide an opportunity to discuss business and build relationships with industry executives in Licensing, Merchandising, Distribution, DVD and Consumer Products, Toy Companies, DVD and Consumer Products Executives.
The Kids strand kicks off with international guests confirmed to date: Nick Wilson, Five UK; Kay Benbow, CBeebies UK; Bob Higgins, Wildbrain USA, and Jules Borkent, Nickelodeon USA.
Industry veteran of children's TV in Canada, Ken Faier, President of the Vancouver based Nerds Corps Entertainment, will also be attending the conference. Ken was the lucky winner at this year's Australian Independent Children's Producers function held in New York during the Kidscreen conference. This is an annual networking event for Australian kids producers sponsored by SPAA.
The Kids POW WOW returns again this year. The format, which consists of 30-minute sessions, allows delegates to meet with some of Europe's most influential players together with Australian producers and commissioners. These sessions allow delegates private time with some of the industry's top leaders in children's television and provide an opportunity for building new business relationships.
7 Network's Ready Steady Pitch will round out the kids strand with a 5-minute timeslot designed for delegates to privately pitch their projects to children's network commissioning executives. This arena provides one-on-one time where delegates can share an idea and receive feedback on their pitch or project.

TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia. With over twenty years experience - the last ten owning her own agency - Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting.
Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors. She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance.

Show-Fest 2009 will be the best ever! Monday 24 August 2009
Drawn from films around the world and selected by a panel of industry professionals, NAFA is proud to present the nine finalist short films of Show-Fest 2009. Screening at the Ritz Cinema in Randwick, five films from Australia will compete with international entries from Germany, France, the Netherlands, and the US.
Show-Fest is widely recognised for its informative "Show and Tell"
where cast and crew are invited on stage to answer questions about their film. This year, for the first time in the festival's six-year history, we will be hearing from overseas filmmakers.
In attendance will be actors, writers, filmmakers, judges, and VIP guests.
The audience will get to vote for the Audience Choice award, and you will also have the chance to win lucky door prizes including theatre tickets, DVDs, movie passes, and magazines. It will be fun and inspiring!
New York filmmaker brothers Frank Monteleone and John Monteleone are proud to announce that Valley of the Moon (the short) will have it's first international screening in Sydney, Frank Monteleone (Writer and Executive Producer) will be travelling to Sydney to attend the NAFA festival and event.

An intensive 6 day workshop for directors exploring the essential concepts of the acting process.
Through script analysis, masterclasses
and hands on directing exercises,
participants will investigate action analysis (units, objectives, obstacles, actions and activities) and story analysis (the writer's statement, story, meaning, themes and styles). Participants will also learn about staging the scene and effective practice in the actor/director collaboration.
During the course each director will direct

Bossy started his radio career in Community
Radio in Sydney. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Commercial Radio Broadcasting at AFTRS. Whilst studying at AFTRS, he worked on the Promotions Team for Nova 969 in Sydney and presented a Saturday nights show. His first fulltime radio gig was at Hot Tomato on the Gold Coast in 2003. He then moved to Nova in Brisbane, where he is an announcer and part of the Online Team
Mitch Smart embarked on the radio life at Byron Bay's Community station. He has completed a Graduate Diploma in Commercial Radio Broadcasting at AFTRS.
At the same time he worked as a Producer & Floater for 2UE's Sky Radio Network. After which he went west to Dubbo, tackling varying roles from Mitch the Star Stuntman on StarFM to Program Director at ZooFM. Mitch has received a Reward for Best Achievement
in Production (Country) and several ACRA nominations including Best Program Director and Best Station Produced Comedy Segment.
He now works casually as an Announcer & Consultant for Brisbane's 96five.

What's On Make a film using 100 actors - and a 100 words
How's this for a challenge? Put together a pitch for a short film that features 100 actors - and give them 100 words of dialogue to tell the story.
AT2 Online Casting and Open Channel are excited to launch this new short filmmaking initiative, with cash and in-kind prizes, including an opportunity to shoot the film and to have it screened it on the short film website Nice Shorts, as well as the AT2 Online Casting site.
The competition will be launched at the next free monthly networking event, run by AT2 and Open Channel, on Tuesday 25th August.
Entrants will need to polish their pitching skills - as the best 4 minute pitch wins the chance to make their film!
Producers Marc Gracie (Takeaway and The Adventures of Lano and Woodley) and Martin Fabinyi (Chopper, Wolf Creek) spoke at the recent July networking event about the importance of perfecting a pitch and how it can make or break an opportunity.
"Tell me the essence of what you're trying to say, in one sentence, capture my attention and I'll listen to the rest of your spiel. If you don't make it compelling straight away, you've lost me," said Gracie on the night.
"An actor needs to capture my attention immediately - show me something that makes me want to give more of my time", said Fabinyi.
The filmmaking competition will be launched at the August networking event, at Spensers Live on 25th August. Written pitch submissions must be made by 10th September and a judging panel will select the best to be presented at the September networking event.
The 5 best pitches will be judged by a panel of industry experts, including Fabinyi, Gracie and a representative from Nice Shorts.
In an unusual move, actors will be invited to participate in the pitches and a filmmaker may choose to use actors entirely to perform their presentation.
The winner on the night will be given the opportunity to make their film, using equipment from Open Channel and screened on the Nice Shorts website. They will also receive a $1,000 cash prize.
The film will be cast exclusively over the AT2 Online Casting system.

Exclusively for Melbourne-based filmmakers, Shorts @ CRUE is a monthly short film festival showcasing the talents of emerging and established local filmmakers. Taking place on the last Thursday of every month, the festival gives filmmakers the chance to screen their work in front of local audiences, as well as the chance to take out the coveted 'Best Film' award, and bag some great prizes.
We're now on the lookout for short films under 15 minutes in length. All entries are welcome, as long as your film can be represented by someone on the night (all finalist filmmakers receive a $50 bar card). Submission and Entry is FREE and we don't have any restrictions on content. Oh, and if your film makes it as a finalist, don't forget to bring your mates down as the 'Best Film' award will be voted by the audience! Entries close 20 August. Our last few screenings have been jam-packed full of film fans, so make sure you get your entry in asap!
