| | | Hi Guys
I have some really exciting news to share about the success of some of our readers.
As you know we have had lots of great auditions through this last couple of weeks and we have been very busy putting our QOS members forward.
Congratulations to Jenna Griffiths, a young QUT student and Quiet On Set member who has an audition for East of Everything - for the role of Nia. East of Everything is an ABC drama starring Richard Roxborough and Susie Porter. They are now filming the second series. Good luck Jenna.
I also had a call from the Director of City Homicide, David Cameron this week. He was a speaker at our last Melbourne Actors Info day in June. He rang to ask if one of the students in the class, David Macrae could come and audition for him for a TVC he was casting. Just by being there, David was spotted and remembered. Well done David - by the way, David lives in Melbourne and not only came to the Melbourne day, he also went to Sydney and did the Sydney actors day as well!! Now that is commitment. ---------------------------------------------------
I continue to get and appreciate the "fab" feedback from our readers, many of whom have been with us since day one. I remember doing a class with Matt Butcher at Screenwise some years ago, and he still keeps in touch. He has been working very hard, gave up his high paying corporate job to follow his dreams and become an actor. He is over in London at the moment and sent this info to share: --------------------------------------------------
Hi Lee, Hope you are well. It is interesting reading the QOS newsletters etc while I am overseas :)
I am obviously still at RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Art - London) and we started rehearsals a couple of days ago for our end of course production.......we are doing King Lear and I am playing Edmund. The script has been trimmed down a bit but nowhere near as much as I thought it would be! The read-through took 2 hours and 20 minutes so it is still bloody long given that the first performance is a week on Wednesday!!! Oh well, as they keep telling us......they managed to put on his plays in less time than this in Shakespeare's day.....let's hope we can manage it.
And on another note.......I am in a short film on Sunday (my day off from RADA!) that is being produced by Kelly Broad and directed by Hattie Dalton. They are the two Aussies who won a BAFTA last year for best short film 'The Banker'. This is their next short film attempt and stars Michael Sheen (the guy who played Tony Blair in 'The Queen') and Derek Jacobi. I am playing a vicar!
And tomorrow on my lunch hour from RADA (yes, they are rehearsing us on Saturdays too)...... I am going to a casting for a role alongside Russell Crowe in the new 'Nottingham' movie where he is playing the lead. They want a load of men to be in his army of soldiers (i.e. chunky blokes with beards who can fight with swords - thank you Sydney Stage Combat School!) Not sure I will get it but it is a Ridley Scott movie so I am definitely popping along to the casting.
OK - better get some sleep....... it is going to be a busy couple of weeks.
Matt ------------------------------------------------------
Also this note from young Alex who is only 15 and also drove down with his mum from Newcastle, to attend the last QOS event in Sydney. Alex has been a Quiet On Set member for many years and when he came to a QOS Actors Info day a few years ago, he got spotted in the crowd by Producer Robert Connelly, and as a follow up, got an audition for Rommulus My Father, to play the role of Eric Bana's son. He got up on stage at the last Sydney event and did a great scene with the Producer from All Saints, Bill Hughes.
Here is the note from Alex's mum:
Hi Lee I just had to let you know that Alex (who was at the Quiet on Set day in Sydney) has just scored an LA agent! We started investigating working in the USA and attend two fabulous seminars.....TVI and Industry Hollywood. The first was geared more towards studying in the USA and the second on how to get a visa, get set up and the practicalities of the industry there. Both were very different and provided a wealth of info. We were looking at different options on how to get an agent when out of the blue, Alex's agent Gina Stoj got an email from LA saying they had seen Alex's work on youtube. They were very impressed with his acting ability and wanted to start negotiations to represent him. Of course, we have thoroughly researched them and have found out they are for real!!!
So, we are about to receive a draft contract for Alex to be represented in LA for one year -how absolutely amazing!
I would suggest that all actors get their showreel...or something of themselves on youtube....why not! Its free!!! We never thought in a million years that this would happen....but there are people/agents out there looking for more talent. Of course, nothing may come of it.....but who knows!!!!! If you don't play the game, you can't win! Once again, thanks for the wonderful seminars....actors are mad if they don't go and get inspired!
It was from your QOS day that we got inspired to follow the dream further. All the best Anne Rzechowicz
Thanks so much for taking the time to share your successes, keep the emails coming, it is motivating for all of us.
Have a great week.
Lee

Those bare essentials to survive in filmmaking...

What You Will Learn: The recent Bergent study commissioned by the old FFC revealed that Australian filmmakers are NOT disadvantaged in our home market. We CAN take our fair share of the +$900m spent annually at the box office - provided we choose to make mainstream movies, not arthouse films.
This one day intensive but entertaining workshop distinguishes between movies that are just a great read and those that will be seen. What does the '3-act-structure' really stand for? What can our AWGIE winners learn from Star Wars? Or As It Is In Heaven, Die Hard and The Lives Of Others ? What could save your script, that Michael Hauge admits he didn't realise? All in one big day, packed with dozens of clips from recent movies and classics. At the end you will have a better understanding of story than McKee will ever teach you.
The workshop will include a 1 hour presentation from a Hollywood based Executive Producer with access to $15m to $50m of film financing money. He will talk about the key steps to pitching a film to a Hollywood producer and give an insight into how the Hollywood script purchasing world really works."
Fees And Registration: - $165 (includes course overview, coffee/tea, script formatting software and 3 months access to online resources). - $125 for Early Birds (payment received before 21 July). Email to register or to receive more details: karel@ozzywood.com .

Testimonials
"I got an enormous amount out of your seminar, and had a really really enjoyable day, thank you! I especially enjoyed the audition process and being able to receive instruction and positive feedback from you - someone who knows the industry inside and out - and also the fantastic insight that you gave from a Director's perspective.I believe that there are no coincidences in life, just opportunities to take action, and by me taking action to attend your seminar, I was able to take so much away with me and make a positive start on my career" - RC, Brisbane
"Just wanted to say thanks for the opportunity to attend Mark Piper's seminar. I certainly got a lot out of it as I know others did too as Mark is such an extraordinarily experienced person in this business. I found his attitude refreshingly honest and whilst a lot of people impart many of the basic information which you hear time after time, Mark made the day so much more as he explained in great detail "how it all works". For "new" actors this day should be looked on as something special as you rarely have the opportunity to sit for a day and listen to someone of Marks' unquestionable character and experience" - GM, Byron
"Your course was the 1st real course I'd done. You have inspired me. I was scared to step outside my comfort zone, but after your course I feel I have a new found confidence level. The DVD is fantastic to have and I have learnt a great deal watching it. I also liked that the group wasn't too large - it allowed us to feel comfortable and learn from each other" - SS, Lismore
"Thankyou for allowing me to join in on the seminar in Brissy a couple of weeks ago. As I write this email I'm editing my reel over the past 6 years of work on film. The course content was great... it was nice to hear you say things from your own working experience as a director that I've heard.but most times from secondary sources. Sometimes when things are summed up from a personal aspect - you tend to really listen. Keep the seminars up.It was a pleasure" - RJ, Brisbane
"My son attended your seminar at Lismore on Sunday, and I would just like to say I wish I could have bottled his energy that afternoon. He could not stop talking about how much fun he had and how much he got out of the day. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy life to give back to the younger generation of up and coming performers" - CB, Lismore
"Just a quick note to say thank you very much for the sharing of your talents as both actors and directors. My daughter got so much out of the day and enjoyed it immensely. The encouragement and tutoring she received was fantastic. Doing this course has done wonders for her confidence in her hope of becoming an actress" - MC, Lismore
