Whoo hoo, I am so excited.

I have just got the list of Term 2 Courses from the amazing Casting Director - Tom Mc Sweeney.
So you lucky lucky Queenslanders!

I mentioned that Tom was opening up a training school up on the Gold Coast a couple of months back but the first lot of classes were all booked out.

I have just received Term 2 Classes from Tom and they are awesome.

As one of Australia's most reputable and leading Casting Directors, Tom McSweeney has worked on over 200 feature film, mini-series and tele-movie projects, as well as over 500 hours of episodic television production for the US, UK, Canadian and Australian markets.

Tom has worked extensively in the television arena and in 2007, received an Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Casting of a Mini-Series for his work on the Gold Coast produced mini-series, "The Starter Wife". In the same year, he was nominated by the Casting Society of America for both "The Starter Wife" and for the 2006 mini-series, "Nightmares and Dreamscapes - From the Tales of Stephen King" which Tom cast in Melbourne. Series work includes projects on both sides of the Pacific including, "Sea Patrol", "H2O - Just Add Water", "Against the Grain", "Dark Justice", "Flipper", "The Lost World" and "Jeopardy" among others.

This past few weeks I have been taking drama classes during lunch times at my local primary school. I am always amazed at the talent of some of the young kids. I have noticed that kids of the age up to 10 yrs are quite fearless. The concern about what others think seems to set in at about 11-12yrs. The yr 5-6 classes are much more reserved and more intent on showing off than actually taking the concepts or characters that we are aiming for.

That concern over what others think translates to down and outright FEAR as an adult and we all have to hurdle that if you want to be a successful actor.

HOW???? I hear you ask.
Well, no easy answer, except to train and practice and learn and read and do it all some more. Then when you seem to have "it". That illusive "it", you have to keep working at it because "it" is so easily lost. Acting is a skill, it is a career, it is a job. So like any skill, job, craft or sport, you have to keep your skills up ENDLESSLY to be a champion.

I know you here me go on about this all the time, but I just get so many emails from young people who want to be actors. They have such unrealistic expectations that you just go and get it. The acting industry isn't like that. It is so competative and so lucrative, the competition is fearce and you have to do whatever it takes ( by which I mean work hard) to be above the next person.
Headshots and agents are the last on your list of things to do when you want to become an actor.
Training and experience is first. Without those two key elements, you will only be wasting your money on headshots and the agent you get will be one who takes anybody on their books as they charge a fee to do this. That is how they make their money.

So..... if you are new to the industry and want to know how this all works. Please, please, please, pick up a copy of the Beginners guides that we have put together for you.

I recently got an email from an onl ine audition site saying:



Lee, 34 New Casting Calls which match you!

Wow, I thought that is incredible.

On further inspection though, 28 of the jobs were in the UK!

Guys be warned about parting with you cash for the influx of online audition sites.

Remember the exchange rate is hideous so $9.95 in UK pounds will set you back approxs $16.50 Aus. Not much per month, but over a year, that is nearly $200.

Also, you MUST be able to see the contacts of the people who put up the audition notices.
If you CAN'T, how do you know that the online site is not making them up!!!!
Why would they do this ???- to make themselves look good and to get your money!!!

Don't say you haven't been warned!!

ADG: Masterclass with Awarded Director, Kate Woods- working with actors
Awarded TV director Kate Woods (Without a Trace, Bones, MDA, Simone de Beauvoir's Babies, Law and Order) presents this exciting hands-on masterclass for directors working and wanting to work in television.

The masterclass will consist of a forum where Kate will present ways of preparing to direct, followed by individual workshopping with actors.

Participants can bring a two-character scene of their own work to workshop, or a scene from a television show can be provided. This one-day professional development event will be held in Sydney on Saturday 18 April 2009 from 10am to 5pm and is open for application until close of business, Monday 6 April 2009.

Applicants must send in a short paragraph outlining why they want to be involved and what they hope to get out of the event, along with their CV. This masterclass is limited to 10 participants and 2 observers. Preference will be given to ADG members and early applicants. A repeat event will be held in Melbourne in June.

Cost (including lunch): ADG Members: $175; Non-members: $250; Observer places open for student/emerging directors only: $60.

Kate Woods Biography
Kate Woods' directing spans some 15 years. She has enjoyed a long association with ABC TV Drama starting with GP and then the hugely successful Phoenix, for which her episodes were nominated for four AFI Awards including Best Director (1991 & 1992).

Kate then went on to direct the NHK co-production Escape From Jupiter (1993) and the ABC TV Drama series Janus (1994) for which her episodes were nominated for two AFI Awards. Other series include Police Rescue (1994), Heartland (1994), Corelli (1995) which received a BANFF International Award for Best Episode in a Television Series, Mercury (1996) Raw FM (1997) Wildside (1997), the CoxKnight children's series Worst Best Friends (2002) based on the stories by Max Dann, Jim Hensen's Sci-Fi series Farscape ( 2002) MDA (2003) and Blackjack (2006).

Kate's direction of the miniseries Simone de Beauvoir's Babies (1997) was nominated for a BANFF award for Best International Television Award and five AFI Awards including Best Mini Series and awarded Best Actor and Actress. Her other mini-series for the ABC are The Farm (2000) which received an AFI nomination for Best Actress and Changi, (2001) a 6 hour mini series written by John Doyle which was nominated for three AFI Awards including Best Mini series and a world silver medal for Best Mini Series from The New York Festivals and the first place Gold Camera Award from the US International Film and Video Festival.

Looking For Alibrandi (1999) was Kate's first feature. With producer Robyn Kershaw, it went on to be nominated for 8 AFI Awards and winner of five 2000 AFI awards including Best film, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actress and Best editing. It was also nominated for seven 2000 Film Critics Circle of Australia awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Editing.

Kate has several feature films in development and most recently has been directing procedural television in the US including numerous episodes of Jerry Bruckheimer's Without a Trace, Bones, Crossing Jordan, Shark, Law and Order, Private Practice. She received the 2008 ADG Michael Carson Award for Excellence In Television Drama Direction, last year.

OK Guys, here is a run down of all the courses starting ASAP.

Acting for the Camera Courses - TERM 2
This ten week term of courses runs from week commencing April 20 - week ending June 27th.

Acting 1 - The Basics | Term 2 - 20 April - 26 June
This course is an introductory course in acting for the camera. Areas covered include the explanation of Industry terminology and on set etiquette, an investigation of various acting techniques and styles and improvisation help the actor break down barriers and connect with other performers.

Acting 2 - The Craft | Term 2 - 20 April - 26 June '09
This course is designed specifically for actors who have had some acting experience and a cursory understanding of industry terminology and on-set protocols.  The aim of the class is to help actors define character for the screen; aiding them in finding nuance and color in a scene as well as honoring the intent of the writer while still adding their own "spice" to the role.

Acting 3 - The Application | Term 2 - 20 April - 26 June '09
This course builds on the principles taught in the previous courses and applies it to the audition process. The class focuses on the level of skill required in a professional casting. Each week the actor is put through a mock audition replicating the conditions of an actual screen test


An essential skill needed for the working actor, this course helps define the tools necessary for effective cold reading. Primarily, this skill set is used on the job when re-writes are given to the actor on the day of shooting or when weather causes a shift in the shooting schedule and scenes not previously scheduled to shoot are suddenly called as "wet weather cover". Often times, particularly with US productions, the lead time in auditioning precludes much preparation time. It is likely, that a producer or director will ask an actor to do a reading of a scene they haven't been given prior to the test. Cold reading also aids the actor in making quick definable choices and forces the artist to think on their feet.

One Day Audition Technique and Script Interpretation
This comprehensive one day Master Class is made up of four parts. The first is a lecture and question and answer period. Participants will then each perform the first scene of the day. One group following another without re-direction or comment until all participants has performed the scene. The scene is then discussed and broken down. The third part of the day is a step by step introduction into script breakdown using various tools to expose the spine of the script.

Advanced Master Class - The Producer Session
This four-hour class builds on the concepts taught in the One-Day intensive and replicates the audition process. The actor will be given a ten minute "audition time" to perform their scene - just like an actual audition. Class members may be asked to be a "reader". After each actor has "tested" the tapes are reviewed and dissected. Following that, the actual tests of local actors who tested for the project will be screened and compared. This course will allow the actor to experience what happens after the test, how decisions are made by producers and directors and what comments are made about the tests. Most importantly, this will highlight the required level of skill expected in actual testing.


Theatre Sports | Term 2 - 19 April - 25 June '09
Theatre Sports are a great way to explore creativity, break down barriers and develop essential skills which will prove invaluable not only in theatre, but also in film and television. Areas covered are in movement, improvisation, team building exercises, slapstick, basic stage combat, dance, song, mime, clowning and much more. This four (4) hour weekly workshop will encourage creativity while exploring the many skills used in the arts. Theatre Sport teams will be developed with an eye towards monthly competitions in various venues around SE Queensland.

PRO- ACTORS WORKSHOP with TONY AUCKLAND & JENNI KUBLER | Term 2 - 20 April - 26 June '09
These classes use a range of techniques to explore characters and scenes, specifically targeting screenwork, but equally usable in theatre work.  Scenes of various sizes and content will be deconstructed to examine truth, relationship, objectives, actions, history, motivation, character choices, attitudes, references and other options available to provide the actor with some tools to refer to when preparing their screentests or performances.

PERFORMANCE GYM | Term 2 - 21 April - 27 June '09
If you are someone who talks for a living, then drop into the Performance Gym.  Just like you need to warm up before you play a sport or do any heavy exercise, a person needs to keep their voice and brain in shape in order to compete in today's world.  The study of the skills and techniques of improvisation can keenly influence a person's competence and success in their personal life, their creative life as well as their business life

Commercials and Presenting | Term 2 - 23 April - 29 June '09
This course is an introduction to both the fields of commercials and presenting. Topics include lifestyle presenting, children's television presenting, news reading and the role of talk show compere in addition to work in the commercial arena. During the course each actor is put through a mock audition replicating the conditions of an actual screen test.

DRAMA SCHOOL AUDITION PREPARATION | One on One - By Appointment
These sessions are designed for the actor planning on auditioning for Drama School.  Investigating the monologue through script analysis and the clarification of choices, we discover and build on your strengths. 

Autumn School Holiday Youth Program | 13 April - 17 April 2009
Whether you're passionate about the stage or the screen our Autumn Holiday Youth Program is a great way to introduce students to the many and varied skills used in the arts.
 During each 8 hour workshop students are encouraged by working industry professionals to explore their individual creativity in a friendly and supportive environment. No experience is necessary, classes are divided by age and sizes are limited to provide maximum individual attention. Come along to one fun-filled day or all five, for a jam-packed acting experience!
A free supervised early drop off period is available for busy working parents.

Youth Screen Acting 1 & 2 | Term 2, 20 April - 26 June '09
Acting like any sport is a skill learned over time; creativity, focus, imagination and technical skill, require practice and time in order to develop, the same way muscles do. The curriculum of our weekly classes has been selected to allow students to explore the joy and self confidence found in performing while carefully guiding them through the technical skills required of the working actor. Regular classes run in line with the 10 week school term and have limited class sizes for maximum individual attention.
  
Pro Kids | Term 2, 20 April - 26 June '09
Pro kids is an advanced screen acting course for children who have either worked professionally or whose performance ability is of an extremely high standard. The course works from basis of scene work and focuses on screencraft, audition technique and script interpretation. Students will be expected to prepare their individually selected scene for each class. Tom McSweeney will guest teach one class every term. Entrance is by audition only.

An average day might involve reading straight commercials, performing characters, singing jingles or narrating a corporate video. The next week you might find your own voice on the end of an on hold system or on your favourite radio station.

Just having a great voice is like owning an expensive guitar - you need still the skills to be able to play it properly. This course has been designed to give you the techniques to get the best out of your voice to get a start in the voice over industry.

Applicants will preferably have some on air experience in either radio or TV or an acting/performance background.

The aim of the course is to teach the vocal skills and techniques required to voice audio features, commercials, promos and narration.

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

* Describe the industry requirements for voice over artists
* Mark up a standard commercial script
* Rework a script to accommodate change in style, time or grammar
* Interpret and deliver straight and character voice reads within an allotted time

It is also a role which industry has identified as one with a need for more skilled practitioners. In this intensive three-day workshop, you'll develop an understanding of the craft of continuity and learn what it takes to work in this role in the film and television industry. Hi Lee,

I have been meaning to write to you for a while but I really wanted to mention a course I did in the US last year (yes, I went to train in the US!!!!). I have long had your voice in my ear, as I remembered one time you said you wished you'd gone there to train years ago and if you had your time over, you would definitely have done that. So I booked a trip in October last year and went. So exciting.

I studied at The Acting Corps in LA and took their 1 month course called Actors Bootcamp. I can't say enough positive things about it! It was 5 days a week for 4 weeks and I learned so, so much there. They focus on the Meisner and Chekhov techniques, which were new to me but I sure learned what they were about quickly. We also took classes in scene study and cold reads etc. It was a fantastic, well rounded course. I can't wait to head back for the next level of Bootcamp - 8 weeks, 5 days a week!

I really wanted to say thank you for being that little voice in my ear that pushed me to take the leap and go to LA. Thank you! And I also really wanted to let people know about this reputable school. If you know of anyone that's considering venturing over, I'd be more than happy to talk to them about my experiences there and accommodation and price and all those things, if they want to email me: tanijacks@yahoo.com.au.
It really helped me to have someone to talk to about schools, as well as little things like transport and getting around.

Oh, and when I got home, I was feeling so motivated and passionate, I auditioned for Screenwise's 2 yr Intensive with Denise, and I got in!! Needless to say, I feel like my journey is well and truly underway and on track :-).

Since I got home, I also auditioned for one of the student films you had in the casting notices (and got the lead!), and I also auditioned for, and landed, a featured extra spot on a TVC, AND a little itty bitty 50 worder (which translates to 1 line lol) on a TV show. This is your chance to immerse yourself in the excitement and challenge of playback theatre. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to have a go, to play, to move and meet yourself and others in a new way. Some of the takeaway skills are; learning to improvise, body language, the power of personal story, use of metaphor, ensemble/team work and active listening skills.

Playback is unique improvisational theatre that breaks down the barrier between actors and audience. It is created spontaneously through collaboration between performers and audience resulting in a unique experience not possible in conventional theatre.

Audience members tell snippets or stories from their lives and the actors play the story back using movement, drama, and music. On the spot - no rehearsal, no planning - complete improvisation.
It's startling, moving, and very often, very funny!

The experience is voluntary your particpation is welcomed and encouraged but not compulsory so shy audience members are welcome to sit back, relax and enjoy the drama unfolding in front of them.........
