| | Hi Everyone
Please accept my apologies! No - I haven't dropped off the face of this earth, Telstra, who host my site, took it in their wisdom to move my site to a different server and then once at the new server, my site crashed with technical problems. So technical in fact that they can't fix it, and it has taken me 2 weeks of screaming to get them to move me back to where I was. Just sitting there on the old server, perfectly happy thank you.
For those of you who rely on Telstra for your business life, I know you share my pain!!!
So sorry guys, now back on track.
I get lots of enquiries from new actors not knowing which sites to join etc, so I have put down some tips for you below. -----------------------------------------------------
ONLINE SITES FOR ACTORS.
It has taken a while to filter down from the US to us but now our online actors "info" sites, and I use that term loosely!, look like the ripoffs that are in the US.
I started Quiet On Set 6 years ago when I was looking for acting info and couldn't find any info for Aussie actors. There were a heap of American sites, all promising different things but nothing for us, so I started Quiet On Set.
We now get over 800 000 hits per month and have a great reputation in the industry. In fact, there are not too many casting agents that haven't heard of us, and in fact, not too many casting agents that I haven't interviewed over the years.
There are a few other sites around and it is insane for you to belong to them all, though I know that desperate actors feel they have to belong to everything so as they don't miss out. Not true and here are some tips to help sort out the opportunities versus the rip offs.
1) You should be able to check out the auditions that are being listed on the site. You must be able to see the quality of the listings before you pay your cash. Do not join a site if you can't see those auditions on a regular basis for free, either at the webpage, or in a mailout.
2) Check out the quality of the auditions the site is listing. If they largely consist of auditions for: - Model competitions or modeling jobs. - Jobs for singers - Community theatre (you can get that info from your local newspaper). - Overseas jobs, like Germany! - Largely competition type jobs, - US jobs, particularly unpaid or independents, unless you have a work visa, they are no good to you. AVOID THESE SITES. - They put all this rubbish in to make it look like ithe site has has lots of listings but they are not valid for actors.
3) Are they offering you any other info except for auditions. Are they giving you free Q&A sessions or services, are they giving you course info for free, are they giving you contacts with industry experts, are they giving you whats on in your industry info for free.
IF NOT - AVOID THESE SITES, you are only paying for auditions and this is not a service, you should not pay for those solely.
4) Are they Australian based, if not- AVOID THEM!
5) Do they explain how the Australian Acting industry works, do they tell you who the main casting directors are, do they help you understand the process and the training required. IF NOT, do not pay for audition information only!
6) So just say you join one of these sites, can you see the independent contact information for each particular job. IT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE that you fill in a FORM to send your details off to the Site moderator. How do you know that they are not making up the casting notices to look like they have extra work. And you are relying on them to put your forward. What time frame do they work in, how can you follow up.
IF YOU CAN'T CONTACT THE INDIVIDUALS FOR EACH JOB PERSONALLY, THERE IS A HIGH RISK THAT THESE CASTING NOTICES ARE JUST MADE UP TO MAKE THE SITE LOOK GOOD.
I mean maybe they are legitimate, maybe they are not, but the point is, you will never know. You submit your details and then have no point of contact for follow up.
NOT GOOD ENOUGH - DO NOT PAY FOR AUDITIONS THAT DON'T HAVE INDIVIDUAL CONTACT NUMBERS OR EMAIL ADDRESSES!
----------------------------------------------------
At Quiet On Set
1) We list our auditions every week in our newsletter. What you see is what is there.
2) We don't list modeling jobs, we rarely do singers unless they are performing as well, like an "act", we don't list overseas jobs and we don't claim small town community theatre to be be the main stay of our listings. We work very heavily in the area of student films and paid work as the film students are the directors of tomorrow.
(I did an audition with a young director called Elyssa Down once, didn't get the job, she called me a few months later for another role and now she is in the big time after just doing the Black Balloon with Toni Collette and Gemma Ward! I am sure I have told you that story before, just repeating for the new readers :)
3) We personally answer over 700 enquiries a year as a free service. We have free tips and info in our newsletters, we have free info mailouts and work to provide as much info as we possibly can for as cheaply as we possibly can to get you started as an actor, without getting ripped off!
4) Yep we are not only Australian based but we are Aussie actors doing it just like you are, so we know what works and what doesn't from an actors perspective. I work with actors and industry professionals in all states.
5) We have heaps of info in our What's On Section in the members area that provides who is casting what at any time. Names and contacts. We also do live sessions with Australians leading casting directors and provide contacts for those people.
6) We always list the direct contacts for our castings. That way, you will be speaking with a real person if you have any questions. We only act as a filter for a major paid role whereby we are working for the casting director or an agent and we handle all submissions, make sure the info is correct etc. There is a reason for this and for those of you who regular submit, you know how exact your E-PITCH has to be.
LASTLY - THE TERM E-PITCH.
I started that phrase and it is a technique we started 6 years ago when freelancers were encouraged to submit themselves with the advent of online technology. There is an art to it and we have a TUTORIAL and sample in our members area. Anyone who is using that on their site is copying my stuff!!!
Note: The majority of new "Actors Info Sites" are started by ex-Quiet On Set readers.
Good luck to them, it is a free world, copying is the greatest form or flatery and competition is great. However, for you guys out there who are trying to source the right information, make sure the sites meet the criteria above before you hand over your cash.
I hope the tips above help. -----------------------------------------------------
ONLINE CASTING SITES
There are a couple of online casting services that the casting agents and talent agents use to facilitate the talent submission process. These are AT2, Showcast and E-Caster (in QLD). Your agent will request you to be a member of one or a couple of these sites, you may be a freelance actor and you can register yourself.
These are Talent Submission sites, not so much actors info, get started type sites and it is valid for your agent to ask you to join.
-------------------------------------------------
Lots of auditions on the board.
Also great courses.
Have a great week.
Cheers Lee

Darren is the kind of kid the world has written off. Abandoned by his mother at 8, bashed into intensive care by his foster carers at 10, he spiralled into drug addiction and has lived hard on the street for over a decade. But since he turned up on the doorstep of OASIS, a grimy red-brick youth refuge in inner-city Sydney, with nowhere else to go, one person has been there for him around the clock: Captain Paul Moulds.
Father figure, counsellor, saviour, and an orphan himself, Paul is nothing short of a legend amongst kids like Darren, who stumble into OASIS at breaking point. No story is too horrific, no circumstance too dire, no kid too damaged. During his chaotic 25 years of service he has helped hundreds of young people deal with unspeakable childhood traumas, chronic drug addictions, mental illnesses, and all of street-life's other dramas. Paul is present at the birth of new babies and there to conduct the funerals of those who self-destruct prematurely. On the wall of his cluttered office in which many kids have found temporary salvation hangs his life's mission statement: "I want to run a rescue shop within a yard of hell".
Today he stops a kid from burning OASIS down; visits a kid in a maximum security gaol; deals with Darren having a psychotic episode; and picks up young mum, Emma, and her new baby from hospital, and moves them into his family home until he can secure suitable accommodation. Tonight he is forced to kick a group of boys off the property, sets up Owen in his first ever independent apartment, and walks the streets with the Salvos outreach van intercepting a 15 year old girl who has naively arrived in Sydney's notorious red-light district, Kings Cross, in midwinter with nowhere to stay. Tireless and non judgmental, his life's passion is to salvage this wasted generation from the wreckage of their lives.
Often it is hard to comprehend what keeps Paul buoyant when positive change is so painstakingly incremental amongst his extended family. But he's prepared to stick with Haley for the long haul, even if she has failed to show up for five appointments to book into detox. "Every kid deserves a 13th chance," he shrugs with a smile.
Charting Paul's struggle to improve the fraught lives of the Oasis kids, this raw observational documentary filmed over two years, is a tribute to the power of one man's persistence in the face of seemingly unrelenting darkness. As time unfolds, some kids pull themselves out of misfortune and aspire to greater things, while others sink deeper into addiction and desperation. In the midst of all the chaos Paul battles unflinchingly on to save these lost children, and reflects on his own past along the way.
