QuietOnSet Newsletter 17th June 2008

Info Update # 16 Tuesday 17th June 2008
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys,

Well, I am just closing down on the mayhem of that last 4 weeks.

We did the Quiet On Set Info Sessions in Sydney - 7 amazing speakers, then the next weekend, the Quiet On Set info sessions in Melbourne, another 7 amazing speakers and then last week I just completed another Australian Walk of Fame event, and we inducted World Motor Cycle Champ Wayne Gardner, 4 x World Surfing Champ Mark Richards and Legend World Ironman Trevor Hendy.

Phew, I am all evented out at the moment!

One thing that has been a clear message from all the amazing people I have met in the last 3 weeks is the humbleness and humility of our sporting champions and the generous and support given by our acting industry professionals.

Australians at the top of their chosen fields, definitely get there through hard work and talent, not from being arrogant and prima donna's. No room at all in that space!

Thanks to all who helped put the shows together, I am so inspired and still on an adrenalin and motivational high!!

----------------------------------------------

Have you seen our new stats. Yep, over 800 000 hits per month. We are heading for the big million baby!

Thanks to everyone for supporting us.

It was nice to meet you recently at the Melbourne Actor's Info day. Thanks for your energy in putting it all together. The range of speakers provided useful and informative guidance. It also succeeded in motivating me to get out there and audition more which I have been doing and relishing in since.

I have yet to get through all the DVD's but feel like they provide an equally effective motivational tool just when I need to give myself a push to get out there and ACT!

Appreciate all your efforts
Elizabeth

Hello Lee,

Thoroughly enjoyed all guest speakers last Sunday 1st June at the Quietonset workshop.

It was great meeting you in person and am happy and confident and supportive of your work for our industry and artists involved in their developing process...via Quietonset!

Thank you very much for a delightful day, it was informative, entertaining, educational, and challenging as it should be! All presenters were enthusiastic, professional, sincere and forthright in contributing their pearls of wisdom from their experience, training and background. An absorbing day! It was a great opportunity, one I would recommend to other artists who missed out this time and may find the workshop session helpful and inspiring in the future...

This newsletter is chock-a-block with info for all states. Don't just check the casting board, there are some great courses happening around the traps.

Have a great week.

This 2 day intensive course is designed to allow participants to immerse themselves in the experience of TV presenting. This highly practical workshop will be facilitated by 9 industry professionals, currently working in network TV. Initially participants will be divided into four groups of six to work intimately

Almost all performances will be recorded on broadcast quality video with a full broadcast TV crew, allowing participants a REAL TV experience as it would happen in the industry. It also allows participants to review their own progress at the completion of each day and receive feedback on their work. At the
conclusion of the course this material will become the property of the participant for their personal use and could be used to create a show reel.

to camera with each of the facilitators. This session will cover the basics of delivery to camera: voice, body language and expression. Each participant will be assessed by each facilitator.

LUNCH
GROUP WORKSHOP 2
Working in rotation between facilitators and crews, participants will record their first professional pieces to camera with our TV crews. They will perform material from lifestyle, light entertainment and travel programs.
Whilst not working with crews participants will write material for the 2nd day of the workshop, with the assistance of facilitators.
A TV wardrobe stylist will also assess each participant and offer tips and advice.

GROUP WORKSHOP 3
Working in rotation each participant will continue to record material with our crews and there will be an opportunity to work with autocue if desired. Participants will be required to present material they have prepared the previous day.
Participants will meet one-on-one with Network Casting Director Henrie Stride and learn about preparing for auditions and sending out show reels.

ARTS/SCHOOL HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES THE RITZ PERFORMING ARTS CENTRE and THE DANCE WORKS Present MARY POPPINS THE MUSICAL - AUDITION WORKSHOP with Queenie van de Zandt

"The cost of the workshop is worth every cent. it's about having an edge in a tough audition, every little bit counts". The Courier Mail

The Ritz Performing Arts Centre and The Dance Works are thrilled to announce that during the June/July school holidays they will be hosting a workshop for children to prepare them for the upcoming auditions for the professional musical production of Mary Poppins, which is auditioning in late 2008. The workshop will be led by one of Australia's musical theatre stars - Queenie van de Zandt.

Queenie van de Zandt is a well-known and highly regarded actor, singer, and writer. She has had 9 nominations for her work, including being nominated for all 3 of Australia's prestigious musical theatre awards; the Helpmann Awards, the Green Room Awards, and the Sydney Theatre Awards and won a Glug Award in 2008, an AussieTheatre.com Award in 2007 and the MEAA ACT Green Room Award in 1997. Critics have raved about her performances in both musical and straight theatre, in shows such as, The Full Monty, The Boy From Oz, Oliver!, Cabaret, Les Miserables, Into the Woods, Speaking in Tongues, Furious and Secret Bridesmaid's Business.

Although many would know Queenie for her work in musical theatre, most would not know that she is also one of Australia's leading teacher's in this field. She has lectured in musical theatre performance for NIDA Open Program, VCA, University of Ballarat's Arts Academy, and Melbourne University and has lead workshops and seminars for many of Australia's leading performing arts institutions such as ANATS (Aust. Nat. Assoc. of Teachers of Singing) in Melbourne, Djarts in Brisbane, and Brent St. in Sydney. Queenie also has a gift for working with children and has developed quite a reputation for her ability to help her students get cast in professional musicals. Queenie ran similar workshops in Brisbane in 2001 while auditions were being held for the touring production of The Sound of Music. Half the children cast in the final production had attended Queenie's workshop.

This time round Queenie is focusing on the musical Mary Poppins, which will be auditioning children in late 2008 for the professional production to be performed in 2009. Queenie teaches the students songs, scenes and movement from the stage show and through improvisation games and role-play the audition process is de-mystified and children come to feel confident of what is expected of them in a professional audition. Queenie's natural warmth and humour helps to spark the children's imaginations and she sends them home singing!

"Not only has Queenie got one of the best voices in the business, but she also has a unique understanding of the acting process..." Todd McKenney (Dancing with the Stars, The Boy From Oz)

"You are such a good teacher! You created such an easy environment for me to go for it and really improve from you! Thank you so much! It was so fun!" Ineka, Master-Class Participant, NSW

WAAPA MUSICAL THEATRE AUDITION MASTERCLASSES
The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts continues its acclaimed Music Theatre Audition Masterclass to help demystify what can be a daunting process - the musical audition.

Tired of "just missing out": the class offers insights for Professional & Amateur Performers, as well as Teachers, & potential WAAPA students.

The Masterclass is held annually in Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, and conducted by permanent staff members of WAAPA's Music Theatre Department.

The three-hour session includes mock auditions for singing, acting, and dance, and prepares auditionees for all challenges from 'cattle-call' to 'callback'. Whilst not a singing lesson, selected participants are used to demonstrate "successful singing & acting approaches", and the session concludes with everyone experiencing a rigorous dance callback.

"An invaluable experience" - Nancye Hayes
