Wishing you a safe Friday 13th.
During the week I had the pleasure of attending the opening launch of Tom McSweeney's new film school.
Those of us up here on the Gold Coast know that Tom is THE man when it comes to casting and sourcing film work. Tom is also an amazing teacher and has been dedicated to the industry for over 25 years.
Quote from the GC Bulletin: "McSweeney said his new venture , Tom McSweeney Productions would give Queensland actors a chance to break into the industry." ... We will have three audition technique courses, and he said he opened the school because he was tired of Queensland actors missing out on cream acting roles.
"An actor is like an athlete. They need to exercise their muscles every day. The school will be the actors gym".
Good on you Tom, that is why you are loved by all.
On the social side, the night was full of stars , agents, producers and the lead cast from Sea Patrol, H2O and Just Add Water were there. Rising star, Lincoln Lewis from Home & Away said a few kind words and intro'd Tom. My boys were very cross with me that I didn't take them, they would have been photo and autograph hunting for sure. They are HUGE Sea Patrol fans.
I actually shared the limo with "Buffer" from Sea Patrol, actor Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, and AJ my 11 yr old wanted to know EVERYTHING that he said.
Which was not much!, just friendly chit chat.
But I couldn't get any photo's as I had to be "cool" and John from TAFTA ( who is teaming up with Tom re the training side of things) refuses to let me be uncool and "star struck". Well he tries anyway.
Meanwhile, Alan Nusbaum from TVI Studios, LA/NY, who flew out just for the opening, (as he is a long time friend of Tom's) had his camera and was happy snapping away all night. See Yanks can do that. It also helped that he brought large, no, VERY large jars of American peanut butter for Tom!
Oh well, back to reality.

Australia Network is Australia's international television channel operated by the ABC, broadcasting to 42 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Nexus is a half-hour program in a magazine format broadcast every weekday by Australia Network. For its 08/09 season we are interested in including short factual films by Australian filmmakers in the program. A once-off licence fee of $50 per minute will be paid.

OPEN CHANNEL is proud to announce that entries for the 2009 Short & Sharp Pitching Competition are now open. Proudly supported by Film Victoria, the Short & Sharp Pitching Competition is now in its 9th year.
Aimed at emerging and mid-career filmmakers, the Short & Sharp Pitching Competition invites entrants to submit a short treatment for a screen-based project of any genre or length. Seven finalists will be selected to present their pitch before a live audience and a judging panel of industry professionals at the Short & Sharp Pitching Competition on Thursday 18 June (venue to be confirmed).
In contrast to previous years, the 2009 Competition is open to projects unrestricted by a set theme or length.
The winner of the Short & Sharp Pitching Competition will have the opportunity to participate in the SDA Pitch as part of SPAA Fringe in October 2009, and will receive Conference registration, transport and accommodation.
A new feature of the 2009 Short & Sharp Pitching Competition is the introduction of the pre-Pitch & post-Pitch mentoring. The Pitch mentor, as well as mentoring the winner leading up to the SDA Pitch, will provide pitch and story development workshops for the Competition finalists.
The short-listed entrants who are not selected as finalists will be entitled to a one-hour meeting with an industry professional for advice on pitch and story, while all unsuccessful entrants will be entitled to a 30-minute over-the-phone discussion.
In this way, everyone who enters the Short & Sharp Pitching Competition is a winner as all Pitch entrants will benefit in one way or another.
