| | | Hi Guys
How has your week been going? I had an audition this week which was awesome. I haven't done much acting for a while and I can't tell you how invigorated I was to get back into it.
The actors life of continual auditions and rejections is quite tiring. It can play with your mind. Particularly if you are doing lots of commercial auditions which are so fast and at times random. I mean random because sometimes the producers don't even know what they want, they just hope to see "it" when it comes through the door. Often there are no scripts and it is all about a "look" or an expression. Very hard to nail it or stand out from the crowd. Those actors who are good "character" actors do very well at commercial auditions and you see the same guys being used over and over.
I am now aware that I was a little "burnt out" from the continuous rejection of the casting world over the last couple of years. But .... take away the opportunity to audition and you certainly miss it. So for me - it was such a thrill to have the chance to perform again. I even had to sing - which was wonderful as I am not a trained singer. It was a real step "out there" for me, hence the added thrill I think. Now I think I looked the part and did a good job, felt like I really nailed it......but, it really is in the hands of the gods! The gods at this point being the producers. lol
If you are an actor and and are not getting the opportunity to audition or work, there are many ways you can initiate this opportunity. I have listed all this info in the "Fast Track Your Career" Info Pack. If you are a Quiet On Set Member - this is free, just send me an email, otherwise you can order it from the side link on this newsletter.
Sea Patrol and The Pacific start this week - loving watching shows made in Aus. I see all the casting info come through so I love to see who actually gets to play the characters. Likewise, it is a buzz when I see the commercials on screen and I have seen the character briefs. It is a wonderful process that happends at breakneck speed. The casting world is such a wild ride. My hat goes off to casting directors, the pace is just so constant.
At the moment, there is a guy on the Coke "Mini can" commercial ( where they play cricket in the loungeroom) who is also in a KFC commercial. There is a guy in a beer add who was also on Packed to the Rafters and played a bad guy on Sea Patrol. There is also a guy with the red hair in the same beer add who was on a Autocheap TVC, on the Austar TVC (baking) and is now in the beer ad. Is that luck - nope - these guys are good character actors and can do great looks instantly!!
Keep up the training.

Just wanted to say thank you!!! Renee Nieass QOS MEMBER attended my Audition Workshop - Hairspray Focus because she heard about it through your website. Said she has been out of the industry for 18 months. Before that she was doing mostly acting/singing work, but misses the triple threat/ musical theatre side of things, so wanted to reconnect with that, and is hoping to audition for Hairspray.
Thank you again! The Casting Process is Fast Tracked MOST of the time, the casting directors specify that they are only looking for actors in certain states. For example - if the TVC is being made in Syd, they only want to audition Sydney actors etc. Everynow and again there is an exception to the rule and the exceptions happen when: it is at the call of the casting director.
Just yesterday, I submitted an actor for a role that required an actor who could speak fluent French. The casting was in being done in Melb by a Syd casting director. All of a sudden, the shooting scheudle changed and they emailed me late in the afternoon to see if we could put the audition down on tape either that afternoon of first thing the next morning. Due to the change in shooting schedule, they could not get down to to Melb to do the casting themselves. Of course we can do this - I got straight on to the actor and we tee's it up with John at TAFTA to do the audition first thing this morning. John will then send it through to the casting director within half an hour.
Now, I must say that this is a feature film - not a TVC and that is when the specifics for that state only mostly apply. Likewise with episodic TV, they do specify that state only as the process just happens so fast and there are about 3 call backs. So you really can't fly backwards and forwards on such short notice of the call backs and wardrobe fittings etc.
There was an article in The Australian this week about that process and Kirsty McGregor from McGregor Casting has a course coming up on this subject:
The casting profession has dramatically changed with the use of tapes, allowing actors to appear remotely instead of live. It has made the process easier and less Sydney-centric, and broadened the horizons for actors.
This month, McGregor cast Luke Ford in Nomads, a Warner Brothers studio TV pilot for Ridley Scott now being filmed in Thailand. Ford recorded his audition in Melbourne and McGregor sang his praises by phone and email.
"They emailed straight back and said `we agree' and booked him the next day," she says triumphantly of Ford's role in a series about backpackers recruited by the CIA.
"[International producers] are looking here a lot," she says. "Australians are so hot right now and just getting hotter because everybody's so lured by the idea of working where the action is, because it's getting so much easier.'
It goes both ways. McGregor cast a German actor as one of the adversaries in Beneath Hill 60 after he sent an audition tape from Berlin.
"It's just a fantastic casting tool now that people don't need to have to come into the studio to see you."
Beneath Hill 60 opens tomorrow nationally. Kirsty McGregor will present casting masterclasses with Anthony Hayes in all capital cities this month and in May. William is a young man with three obsessions: very strong long blacks, pining for his lost Salome, and listening to The Smiths. He only exists to devour coffee, despise people and worship the patron saint of wrist-slashing - Steven Patrick Morrissey.
Just like his idol, the world he occupies is cruelly lonely. He stumbles from café to cemetery in search of a companion or maybe just a confidant. He runs headlong into Salome; the obtuse, obstructive, agent of seduction who slithers her way into his addictive personality. Meanwhile, the best friend that he never knew he might not have one day, Rick, is struggling with his desire for William while confronting his own mortality. A dark and funny play set to the music of The Smiths, the music that gives William a chance to be more than just Half A Person.
Mark Taylor theatre credits include: Rent, The Underwood, Away, The Crucible, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Time and the Conways and The Choir. He recently donned a rifle and helmet for the HBO mini-series The Pacific, before making a dramatic change of pace by touring Australia with the children's theatre company, Alpha Shows.
Director Robert Chuter is not a person prone to making conventional theatre & his acclaimed works such as Loving Friends, Le Miracle de la Rose, Lady Chatterley's Lover, Anne of Green Gables, Homme Fatale, The Death of Peter Pan, The Hive, The Object of Desire, Dimboola, Almost & Heights have earned him a reputation as a distinctive director of over 200 plays. He won a Green Room Award in 1990 for his work on the acclaimed In Angel Gear. He studied at VCA & was a trainee director at the Queensland Theatre Company. Chuter graduated from the prestigious Swinburne Film & Television School, winning the AAV Award for his short film: The Mortal Coil. He recently completed his debut feature film The Dream Children to be released in 2011.
Writer Alex Broun has enjoyed considerable success in theatre, TV & film as a writer, actor & director. One of the world's leading ten minute playwrights, he has had over 60 ten minute plays produced in nearly 400 productions all over the world. He has also twice received funding from Screen Australia as well as recently having five short screenplays filmed and was a winner of the Inscription Script awards in 2009 for his screenplay of The Jacaranda Tree. He is currently the Artistic Director of Short + Sweet, the largest ten minute play festival in the world that currently plays in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, the Central Coast of NSW, Gippsland, Rockhampton, Newcastle, Auckland, Singapore & Malaysia.
