Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

There are a couple of courses through this week that I am liking.

Check out the Speed Auditioning at Screenwise, and a new listing by Suzie Maizel.
I did a few castings with Suzie over the years, she is amazing and they have put together a unique concept.
All courses are listed under the casting board.
------------------------------------------

I often get emails from actors who are really frustrated with the process. They are doing the courses, dedicating their time, creating a good product ( SPENDING THE MONEY), yet they can't seem to get anywhere.
I completely understand the frustration - it is such a tough industry but.............you have to think about your acting career as a business.

If you want to be a professional in a high paying industry, at the top of your field - how long do you think that would take. Think a dentist and a doctor. Those guys study for 6 years minumum. Then to be a general GP, you are with the rest of the pack, you then have to go on to more study to specialise and it is then that you start to earn the big bikkies - when you have developed your own practice.
Acting is similar - there is no such thing as overnight. My personal opinion is that it is unreasonable to go from nothing to regular actor on a series in 2 years. 2 years is just your kindergarten.
From most actors I have interviewed, they have all said 10 years is more like it. Think about actors that do the full time NIDA course. 3 years of permanent study will put them ahead of the rest as they are actually working hard for those 3 years. Then...there is no guarantees for them and there are many ex NIDA graduates who are out of work, or who have struggled.

So how much study/training/doing short films and community projects is enough ?
There is no answer to that.

If you are an actor who struggles with the frustration of wanting more work and just can't seem to break through, then I would suggest you watch the interviews with:
Nick Hardcastle - Actor ABC Creature Features, Denise Roberts - Actor - on EVERYTHING, Alex Pinder, Ocean Girl, Wil Traval Actor - All Saints and Damien Walshe-Howling, Actor/Blue Heelers and Ditch Davey - Actor Sea Patrol.

They are all Aussie actors who have done the hard yards and they generously share their secrets and their journey. This will keep it very real for you.

Other resources that will help you are our interviews with Felix Williamson ( he is the guy on the Commonwealth Bank Ads) and is now living and working in the US. We also have helpful hints from actor/producer Matt Norman, Fletcher Humphries- Actor - All Saints/McLeod's, and Larry Emdur - TV Presenter.

They all are recognisable faces on tv, have done it tough for most of their acting life ( or are still doing it tough) and can help you make realistic business decisions for your acting career, as well as keep you motivated and passionate.

Don't be frustrated - take positive action.

I have put these info packs together as a one off for you.

You can order them at the bookstore or by clicking on the link at the side.

QOS Reader is working towards Success.
Melbourne ba sed filmmaker and QOS reader Troy Nankervis is a Top 10 Finalist in the OPTUS ONE80 PROJECT, a competition that gives the winner the chance to get a drama series concept made for MTV.

Troy's entry 'Wasted' is set in Melbourne's pub and live music scene:

What would you do if you walked into hell, but you didn''t know it?

".Nathan''s in a jam. He''s got no house, no money, and no job. That is, until he stumbles across the ''Stone Pony'', And once he''s inside, there''s no going back...

Wasted is a rockin'' eight part one hour drama series set against the backdrop of Melbourne''s live music scene.

In a dark, dingy bar in the heart of Fitzroy, the young workers at the ''Stone Pony'' do whatever the hell they want because in this joint there''s no rules, no responsibilities and no one to answer to. Nathan''s naivety is his worst enemy as he slowly becomes consumed by the reckless lifestyle of his new work friends."

Troy hopes to promote live music culture through this project through addressing some of the issues affecting our music scene at the moment, as well as promoting independent artists and musicians in every episode on the soundtrack.

You can support Troy by voting for 'Wasted' @ one80project.com.au
Voting Closes April 5th.

Meet the Filmmakers - All My Friends are Leaving Brisbane - 10 Apr
Wide Angle Tasmania and the State Cinema are proud to present a screening and seminar with Stephen Vagg and Louise Alston.

Stephen and Louise always wanted to make a feature film. In 2006 they decided to make it happen, raising $42,000 of their own money they made the romantic comedy "All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane", Louise directing from a script by Stephen. The film ended up receiving post production funding from Screen Australia, achieved a cinema release (including a two month-run in Brisbane and in Denmark), was nominated for an AFI, and won the Audience Awards at the National Film Festival in Denmark and the London Australian Film Festival. It also launched Stephen's career as a writer and enabled Louise to raise funds for a second feature, "Jucy" which has just finished post production and is awaiting release.

To find out how they do it, come meet Louise and Stephen for a Q and A following a screening of the film.
