Info Update # 29 Wednesday 23 September, 2009
Latest News Featured Article Casting Board Film Competitions Select State

Hi Guys

This newsletter is sooooo jam packed.

Courses to take note of and not to miss out on are:

John from TAFTA has a Teen Actors Intensive happening in Sydney during the school hols.
This is a full week of scripts, acting, scripts and more acting, performing, workshopping and learning. I am so jealous - I want to do this.

The teachers are amazing and this is a great opportunity to get in front of and learn from some of Australia's busiest casting directors, directors and producers.
This course is highly recommended.

For Gold Coast actors, check out the National Actors Intensive. Another TAFTA productions course and an awesome line up of teachers and industry professionals to take your acting ability to the next level.
These intensive workshops give you the opportunity to really get ahead of the game.
It is the opportunity to be an full time acting student for the week and this continuity of workshops and practice really makes a difference to your ability and confidence. The opportunity to work with such high profile casting directors and producers is also a must for any actor who is "serious" about actually working.

Toni Higginbotham has some great "1 day" workshops for kids if time is a problem. Keep your eye on those.

We also have some great courses listed if filmmaking is your thing.
Likewise, the Australian Writers Guild has a great script writers initiative.

Plenty of reading in the newsletter, get amongst it.

Cheers
Lee Donehue

HOLIDAY WORKSHOP FOR KIDS ACTING UP IN THE SCHOOL HOLIDAYS with Casting Director - Toni Higginbotham
TONI HIGGINBOTHAM is a leading casting director in Australia. With over twenty years experience - the last ten owning her own agency - Toni has a reputation for obtaining results by looking beyond the traditional means of casting.

Through her time as Casting Director at the ABC, her work on A Country Practice and E Street, as well as the hundreds of TV commercials she has cast, Toni has developed strong relationships with the pool of high-profile Australian actors. She has helped launch the careers of international stars, casting actor CATE BLANCHETT in her first TV role and model MEGAN GALE in her first on-screen performance.

Moreover, Toni understands that finding the perfect cast is not a matter of flicking through a book. She scouts for real people that will give the product the edge it requires.

'When I work with Toni, I know I'm going to end up with a great cast.'
Mat Humphrey, The Guild

Toni collaborates closely with directors and she ensures that her vision is aligned with that of the creative team.

'The casting director is a collaborator. As a director, I don't want a casting director to bring in a bunch of people in the hope that I will find one who is interesting. That is a waste of my time and the actor's time. Toni and I discuss the roles in detail and she will bring in four or five really good people for each role. It's great when you take the results to the agency and nobody can decide who to lose!'
David Gaddie, The Sweetshop

Toni is a specialist in TV commercial casting, as well as consulting on drama projects and presenting roles for the major networks. Hunting for talent for the thousands of different roles has resulted in Toni becoming an invaluable resource for directors and producers of the highest calibre.

Australian Writers Guild - Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative.
The Australian Writers Guild has once again joined forces with FremantleMedia Australia to present the Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative. The initiative provides the opportunity for two writers to join the Neighbours writing team for six weeks as trainee storyliners and learn what it takes to write for Australia's favourite serial.

One of the AWG's popular initiatives for performance writers, the scheme is in its third year and Neighbours Script Producer Lara Radulovich says they couldn't be more pleased with the results. "It's been a fantastic success. Two former trainees are now full time members of the team. They bring to the show a passion for storytelling, a love of writing, and a wicked sense of humour, which is exactly what we're looking for. "

Eloise Healey was one of the first recipients of the Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative and was a video editor before she began her internship. After six weeks in the story room she was offered a permanent contract as a Storyliner and now, eighteen months later, is a Story Editor on the serial. "The initiative gave me my first real break into the script side of television, and I'm thrilled to finally be able to call myself a professional writer" she said.

Last year's recipient Elliott Devine says that his internship was the big chance he needed to get into the industry. "In a business where there aren't many entry-level openings, the initiative got my foot in the door, and I've done my best to squeeze the rest through!" Elliott was also asked to stay on at the end of his placement and now has a permanent contract as a Storyliner.

TO APPLY:
To apply for the AWG FremantleMedia Neighbours Scriptwriter Training Initiative applicants must provide a story idea for the serial using current Neighbours characters. Applications are invited from both new writers and those who have experience in other areas of performance writing. The successful applicants will also receive $5,000 each.

Applications close 5pm Friday 16 October 2009.

For guidelines and an application form go to www.awg.com.au or call 1300 552
